New Hand Luggage Policy Causes Frustration – What Passengers Should Know

The British airline easyJet recently tightened its hand luggage rules. While the airline claims the changes speed up and simplify the boarding process, numerous passengers report the opposite: long wait times, confusion, and additional costs.

In the nau.ch article, in which we at cancelled.ch were invited to provide expert input, the topic was examined in depth – and it clearly highlights how perceptions between the airline and its passengers can differ significantly.

An Overview of the New Policy
According to the updated rules, easyJet passengers may now only bring one small piece of hand luggage on board free of charge, with maximum dimensions of 45 × 36 × 20 cm and a weight limit of up to 15 kg. This item must fit under the seat in front. Those wishing to bring larger hand luggage must book it for an additional fee – usually bundled with what’s called “Speedy Boarding.”

“Simplified” Boarding – Really?
While easyJet insists that the new concept streamlines procedures, travellers report quite the opposite. Gate controls have become stricter, with every piece of luggage being checked for size and weight. This frequently leads to delays, disputes, and frustration – sometimes even to delayed departures.

Legal Implications
Under contractual freedom, airlines have considerable leeway when it comes to defining luggage policies – including size and weight limits. Legally, there is little to object to, as long as the rules are communicated in advance and are accessible to passengers.

Our Advice at cancelled.ch
We strongly recommend that travellers familiarise themselves with the applicable baggage policies of their airline before booking a flight – especially when the journey involves multiple segments operated by different carriers. What counts as “hand luggage” with one airline may already be a chargeable option with another.
